A NaNoWriMo Treasure Hunt!

Ahoy, Mateys! I’m slipping into my alter-ego for a minute to bring you a YA Buccaneer NaNoWriMo Tip for our Treasure Hunt! Yes, it’s almost November, and to get ready, we’ve decided to post our favourite NaNo tips for you…as part of a treasure hunt. We also have a special prize up for grabs: an e-copy of Chris Baty’s NO PLOT? NO PROBLEM! All you have to do is leave a comment here and visit the next blog! I’ll post the link later in this post.

My special NaNoWriMo Tip is all about sleep. Yes, sleep.  It may seem counter-productive to trying to write 50,000 words in one month, but you’ll thank me for this later, I promise.

Most people will forego as much sleep as they can handle in order to squeeze in the proper word count each day.  Some will get up early, most will write into the wee hours of the night. But what if you had a good night’s sleep every second day? Wouldn’t you feel better and be able to think clearly? Of course! I don’t know about you, but if my brain is hopped up on caffeine for days on end, nothing makes sense any more. And all it takes is a few good hours of rest to start the synapses firing again.

So, remember as you begin NaNo…you’ll want to write as much as you can. The idea of staying up late is appealing…for the first week. Pretty soon, though, your body will be DYING for sleep. Go to bed early one or two nights a week. Or take a quick nap at lunch. Just make sure to get some rest or you will not only write jibberish, you’ll be no good to anyone else. It’s already a stressful period. Don’t add sleep deprivation induced aggravation to the list. GET SOME REST!

Now, be sure to leave a comment at the end of this post to earn an extra entry into the draw this month. And now head on over to see what Jas Ketch, Siren of the Seychelles, has to say about National Novel Writing Month! You’ll be glad you did, matey!

For now, Guppy Guts Skullcracker is setting sail! Ahoy!

How did you know I wasn’t planning on sleeping in November?!?
You are right though. Sleep does make everything better. Thanks for the advice.

  2. Ohhh, sleep. Yeah. That. 😉 This is a great tip, Heidi. I certainly don’t do my best writing when I’m bleary eyed an exhausted. 🙂

  3. I think this is my favorite tip yet! I love sleep! Ha. But in all seriousness, I totally agree. I can’t function when I don’t get a certain number of hours, so it’s definitely important for me to be well-rested in order to be creative and bang out words. 🙂

Me, too. I can’t even think straight, let alone get my characters to do anything when I’m dead dog tired. It’s important, right?

  4. Oh sleep, how I love you soooooooo. I will admit though, I’m easily one of those people that will bypass the siren’s call of my pillow, to get those words down. For me, sometimes I’m more productive on the lack of sleep — but really, it all depends on my muse. If she wants to go, we go…if she wants to sleep, well, I’m not going to argue.

    Excellent advice, H. 🙂

Coffitivity is honestly the best. It really helps me when I’m trying to get writing done. 😀
